Orthopaedic and arthroscopic specialist
Dr Allan Larsen MD, PhD
In 2002 Dr Larsen was awarded the qualification of Orthopaedic Specialist in Denmark and a Fellowship by the Danish Orthopaedic Society at Liverpool and Broadgreen University hospitals, UK. The fellowship gave him access to one of the most advanced knee surgery departments in Europe.
He developed an arthroscopic method (keyhole surgery) for performing cartilage transplantation - Autolog cartilage Transplantation (ACT) which is now available at certain hospitals. ACT is cartilage transplantation performed using the patient's own cartilage cells which have been cultured for 4-5 weeks after a tiny biopsy has been taken from the knee under arthroscopic examination.
He has also recently developed new surgical techniques for performing traditional Autolog cartilage transplantation. This has reduced surgery time significantly. The less time spent on surgery - the less risk of complications - the higher success rate.
Dr Larsen has been appointed Head of the Cartilage Research unit at Aalborg University hospital in Denmark where he is working as a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee surgery for both athletes and patients with degenerative knee diseases (osteoarthritis).
For the past 2 years he has also been testing a revolutionary arthroscopic method of performing cartilage transplantation at the Foulum Research unit in Denmark. Several methods have been tested and the most promising is now undergoing further improvements.
Apart from osteoarthritis, Dr Allan treats all kinds of sports traumatology injuries, recuperating the previous functional level thereby preventing the development of osteoarthritis in the years to come.
Additionally he performs hand and foot surgery.
Orthopaedic treatments offered
Arthroscopy
Arthroscopy is an operation performed on a joint using the 'keyhole' technique. An instrument which contains a video camera is inserted into the joint to allow examination of the inside. By using specially designed probes and instruments, the surgeon can treat the inside of the joint.
Knee surgery
Treatment of severely affected cartilage or osteoarthritis can be done using a Microfracture operation. This is an arthroscopic technique in which the surgeon rebuilds your cartilage by creating cartilage-like tissue if the cartilage defect is surrounded by normal cartilage.
Cartilage can also be repaired using a new treatment - TruFit CB plugs - a technique developed by Smith and Nephew, leaders in arthroscopy and orthopaedics.. The plugs can be used on large areas with cartilage defects, provide immediate pain relief and patients can walk on these plugs after 4-6 weeks depending on the size of the area that was repaired. The plugs consist of a stable scaffold on which stem cells can migrate to and start to produce cartilage. Cartilage is regenerated within one year.
