The Barraquer Ophthalmology Centre in Barcelona, a leading specialist eye centre in Spain, performs 300 cornea transplants per year and has treated patients such as the Spanish Royal Family, foreign dignitaries, politicians, Nobel Laureates in Literature, poets and other members of the art world.
The centre is renowned for the discovery of facoerisi, a crystal extraction technique that has revolutionised the world of ophthalmology. It has also been responsible for the creation of a new type of operating room specially conceived for teamwork and teaching as well as the creation of teaching professorships and investigative studies.
The centre has staff who specialise in different diagnostic techniques such as functional exploration (optometry, compimetry, interferometry), image diagnosis techniques (angiography, ultrasound, biometry, electrophysiology). It has a permanent ophthalmologic emergency service that works 24 hours a day and has an on-call team of ophthalmologists and nurses. This department works very closely with the Internal Medicine department, laboratory personnel, a surgical team and the department of Anaesthesiology.
It has been awarded every accreditation given by the Health Department of the Generalitat de Catalunya and has been nominated by the National Consumer Organisation as the best ophthalmologic hospital in Spain.
